Can you swim in Perdido Key today?
You can swim in Perdido Key any day the beach flag isn't double red — but the flag color tells you how risky it is. Green is calm, yellow means moderate surf and currents, red means strong currents and high hazard, and double red means the water is closed to swimmers. We track the live flag for both the Florida and Alabama side on the Beach Today page.
What the flag colors mean
Gulf Coast beaches fly a colored warning flag that's updated through the day as conditions change:
- Green — calm, low hazard. Good swimming.
- Yellow — moderate surf and currents. Swim with caution.
- Red — high hazard, strong currents. Strong swimmers only, close to shore.
- Double red — the water is closed. Swimming is prohibited and you can be fined.
- Purple — dangerous marine life (jellyfish, stingrays) spotted; the flag flies alongside a surf flag, not instead of it.
Check today's flag before you go
Flags change fast — a green morning can turn red by afternoon when the wind and tide shift. Don't drive on yesterday's report. We pull the current flag for Perdido Key (FL) and Orange Beach (AL) onto the Beach Today page, alongside water temperature, surf, and the next tide, so you can check before you load the car.
Rip currents are the real danger
Most Gulf rescues and drownings come from rip currents, not big waves. They're strongest on red-flag days. If you're caught in one, don't fight it back toward shore — swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the pull, then angle in.
