Is the water clear in Perdido Key?

Perdido Key is known for clear, emerald-green Gulf water over sugar-white sand, but clarity isn't guaranteed on any given day. Calm, low-wind mornings after a stretch of settled weather are clearest; strong onshore wind, big surf, and runoff after heavy rain stir up sand and turn the water murky and brown near shore.

What makes the water clear (or not)

Three things drive day-to-day clarity:

  • Wind and surf — calm, glassy mornings are clearest; onshore wind and breaking waves churn up sand.
  • Rain and runoff — heavy rain pushes tannic, stained water out of the bays and passes, which can cloud the nearshore Gulf for a day or two.
  • Tide and time of day — early morning before the sea breeze fills in is your best window.

How to catch a clear day

Aim for the first few hours after sunrise, ideally on a green-flag day with light wind. We post the live surf, wind, and flag conditions each morning, which is the best proxy for clarity — low surf and light wind almost always means clear water.
