Sand in the Coffee, Vol. 133: the beach gear in your garage, and how to put it away right
Salt is patient. Leave a beach chair in the garage with the Gulf still on it and by spring the hinges have formed an opinion. They will squeak it at you every time you unfold the thing.
So here is the routine, whether you are a local stowing gear for winter or a visitor about to pack the car and head home. None of it takes longer than a cup of coffee.
rinse it, all of it
Use fresh water and a hose, not the shower you were saving for yourself. Spray the frame, the hinges, the wheels, and the little gap where the fabric meets the tube. That gap is where sand collects. Open every zipper and run water through the teeth. For coolers, a squirt of dish soap and a splash of vinegar handles the smell of the last cooler-full of bait and bologna.
dry it in the sun, fully
Open everything up and let it sit in direct light for an afternoon. Folded wet fabric grows mildew in a day or two, and a mildew smell does not wash out of a beach umbrella. If you have a canopy or tent, stretch it out and let it dry before it goes back in the bag.
the five-minute fix list
- Wiggle every hinge. If one is gritty, rinse it again and work it open and closed under the water.
- A drop of light lubricant on metal pivots, wiped so it does not stain the fabric.
- Shake out every pocket. A forgotten sandwich in a cup holder is a spring surprise.
- Check umbrella ribs and tent poles for bends. Replace them now, when the shelves are full, and not in June.
- Wheels on a cart or wagon: pull off the sand that is wrapped around the axle.
storing it
Hang it or stand it up, off the floor, in a dry spot. Garages near the water get humid, so a plastic bin with the lid cracked beats a sealed one. If you are a visitor packing for the drive home, bag the wet stuff apart from clothes.
one more thing before you pull the chairs out again
The beach is still recovering from the storm, with crews and debris in places, so before you haul gear down for a sunset sit, glance at /beach-today/ for flags and conditions and at the live cam to see the actual sand. Stay out of roped-off areas.
Put your gear away right and it will wake up in March ready to work. The hinges will have nothing to say.
