How to read the cam

The surf. Watch where the water breaks. A Gulf that's flat and glassy with barely a line of white is a swimming day. When you can see whitewater forming well offshore and rolling in as stacked lines, there's real swell running — and that usually means current running with it.

The water color. On calm days the Gulf here goes that ridiculous emerald green. After a blow or a storm it turns tan and murky close to shore. That's suspended sand, not pollution — it's what a stirred-up sandbar looks like, and it clears on its own once the wind lays down.

The time of day. Mornings tend to be the calmest, before the sea breeze fills in and puts a chop on the water through the afternoon. If the cam looks rough at 3pm, check it again at 7am before you write the day off. At night the frame goes dark — there's no lighting out over open water — and it comes back at sunrise.

And the honest caveat: the cam shows you what the water is doing, not whether it's safe. Rip currents don't always look like anything from shore, and some of the most dangerous days out here are the ones that photograph beautifully. Use the cam to plan; use the flag flying at the beach access to decide whether you get in.
