Perdido Key & Orange Beach Radio Guide
Every channel worth knowing on this stretch of coast, in one place: ham repeaters and nets, the Coast Guard and marine VHF, NOAA weather radio, what you can (and can't) hear on a scanner, and the parks to activate. Every frequency links to its source.

Marine VHF channels and the Coast Guard
Coast Guard Sector Mobile runs search and rescue for this whole stretch, with boat stations at Pensacola and Dauphin Island. Set your radio to USA mode: in International mode, channel 22A becomes a two-frequency channel and you won't hear the Coast Guard's broadcasts. Newer radios may show 22A as 1022.

Bridges, marinas and towing
There are no drawbridges between Pensacola Beach and Gulf Shores. The 2026 Coast Pilot lists every bridge as fixed: the Theo Baars Bridge onto Perdido Key (73 ft), the Perdido Pass Bridge (54 ft over the pass, 41 ft over the Cotton Bayou channel) and the Old River bridge (24 ft). Channel 13 is still the one for passing arrangements with tugs and barges on the Intracoastal. The Coast Pilot also warns that the Perdido Pass east jetty is more than half submerged, just 1 to 3 feet down at low tide.

POTA parks and grid squares
Perdido Key is a Parks on the Air paradise. You can activate a state park and a national seashore without leaving the island, then hit a third, Big Lagoon, on the drive home. Perdido Key is in grid EM60: it straddles EM60gg and EM60gh along 30°17.5′ N. Orange Beach is EM60fg, and its west end, Gulf State Park included, is EM60eg.

Scanner: what you can hear — fire, EMS and lifeguards
Most of the action here is digital. Escambia County, FL runs conventional P25 channels with no county trunked system. Baldwin County, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are on AIRS, Alabama's P25 Phase II trunked system, so you need a scanner that decodes Phase II. The good news is that fire, EMS and the lifeguards are in the clear.

Scanner laws: Florida vs. Alabama
- Florida: Fla. Stat. 843.16 bars installing or carrying a radio tuned to police or fire frequencies in a vehicle or business, a first-degree misdemeanor. The exemptions include FCC-licensed ham operators, news media and emergency personnel. Using what you hear to commit a crime or tip off a suspect is a separate crime (843.167).
- Alabama: we found no statute restricting scanners in vehicles. Intercepting encrypted public-safety traffic is a Class C felony (Ala. Code 13A-10-16).
- Federal: listening to public-safety radio that isn't encrypted is lawful (18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(g)), but publishing what you intercept can break 47 U.S.C. 605.
This is a plain summary, not legal advice. Crossing the state line on Perdido Key Drive changes the rules.
Numbers to keep in the phone

Frequently asked
What VHF channel does the Coast Guard use near Perdido Key and Orange Beach?
Channel 16 (156.800 MHz) for distress and calling — Coast Guard Sector Mobile listens around the clock. Safety and weather broadcasts are announced on 16 and then read on channel 22A (157.100 MHz), which only works with the radio set to USA mode. For an emergency on the water, call on 16 or dial 911.
What is the NOAA Weather Radio frequency for Perdido Key and Orange Beach?
KEC86 on 162.400 MHz (WX2), transmitting from Milton, FL, covers both Escambia County, FL and Baldwin County, AL. KEC61 on 162.550 MHz (WX1) from Mobile also covers Baldwin County. SAME codes: Escambia County FL 012033, Baldwin County AL 001003.
What ham radio repeaters are closest to Perdido Key and Orange Beach?
The closest are the WN1R repeaters at the Orange Beach Welcome Center: 443.400 MHz (+5 MHz, tone 123.0 FM, also DMR color code 5) and a 145.275 DMR machine. On the Florida side, Five Flags ARA runs W4UC 145.450 (−, 100.0) and 443.850 (+, 100.0) in Warrington, and the Escambia ARES net repeater 146.760 (−, 100.0).

Orange Beach and Gulf Shores police dispatch are encrypted, so you will hear nothing. Orange Beach Fire (talkgroup 20211), Orange Beach Surf Rescue (20214) and the Gulf Shores Beach Patrol lifeguards (21201) are in the clear on AIRS, Alabama's P25 Phase II trunked system, so you need a scanner that decodes P25 Phase II.
Can you listen to Escambia County fire and EMS near Perdido Key?
Yes. Escambia County Fire Rescue dispatch (which covers Perdido Key's Station 19) is on 460.575 MHz P25 digital and 154.430 MHz analog (PL 118.8). EMS dispatch is 462.975 MHz P25. Sheriff patrol channels are encrypted.
Is it legal to have a police scanner in your car in Florida?
Florida Statute 843.16 makes it a first-degree misdemeanor to install or carry a receiver tuned to police or fire frequencies in a vehicle, with exemptions that include FCC-licensed amateur radio operators, news media and emergency personnel. Using what you hear to help commit a crime is a separate offense (843.167). We found no Alabama statute restricting scanners in vehicles, but Alabama makes intercepting encrypted public-safety traffic a felony.
Are there any drawbridges near Perdido Key or Orange Beach?
No. Every bridge from Pensacola Beach to Gulf Shores is fixed: the Theo Baars Bridge to Perdido Key (73 ft), the Perdido Pass Bridge (54 ft over the pass) and the Old River bridge (24 ft). Use channel 13 to arrange passing with tugs and barges on the Intracoastal.
