Sand in the Coffee, Vol. 140: the 3 o'clock beach, and why late October belongs to the after-lunch crowd
Put the alarm clock down. In late October, the early shift is not the smart shift.
All summer, the rule is to beat the heat and beat the chair caravan, which means being on the sand by 8. Fall flips it. A cool morning can mean a damp towel, a breeze that makes the shade feel like a refrigerator, and a beach that is cold to sit on until the sun has done some work. By early afternoon the same stretch of sand has warmed up and is mostly yours.
why the afternoon wins right now
- The sun is lower and kinder. You can stay out past lunch without the fry-an-egg feeling of July.
- The parking is easier. The people who arrive at 8 are leaving by 1, and the lots on Perdido Key Dr and along the Orange Beach side loosen up.
- The light is better. Late afternoon is when the Gulf gets its color. Sunset is coming in around a quarter to six, so a 3 o’clock arrival gives you a long, warm stretch before it.
the schedule
- Arrive between 1 and 3. Eat lunch somewhere with a roof first, then go.
- Bring one more layer than you think. A sweatshirt in the bag costs nothing. Once the sun gets low, the breeze off the water has opinions.
- Check the flag before you wade. Fall surf can be rougher than the sky suggests. /beach-today/ shows the Florida and Alabama flags side by side, which is handy if you are deciding between the Key and Orange Beach.
- Stay for the sunset, then leave. Folks tend to pack up all at once as the sun touches the water, so wait ten minutes and let the lot clear.
the one catch
Weekends are still weekends. If the day is sunny and mild, Saturday will be busier than Tuesday no matter what time you pick. If you have a choice, a weekday afternoon in late October is about as good as this coast gets.
Want to check before you drive? The cam at /live-cam/ will show you how many chairs are out and whether anyone is actually in the water, which is the most honest crowd report there is.
