The Salt Line, Vol. 75: The Index — One Football Game With Two Final Scores, a Lane Named Springsteen That Stopped Running, and Six Months of Foley Not Thinking About the Cloud

Welcome to The Salt Line, the Gulf Coast news column that reads the whole article so you don’t have to and then, frankly, wishes it hadn’t. It’s the 28th, which means the Index: the week rendered as numbers, with commentary, because this week the numbers were doing all the work anyway. A university shut down at lunch to play football. A town paused the cloud. A road with a rock star’s name on it stopped running. Let’s count.

🏈 Athletics, Division Won

1 — Division I football games the University of West Florida has ever played, as of Thursday night.

1 — Division I football games the University of West Florida has ever won. Undefeated. All-time. A perfect record is a beautiful thing, and I’d like it framed before the next kickoff ruins it.

37–34 and 34–31 — Final scores of that one game against Southern Illinois, as reported in two different stories by the same television station. Both versions have the Argos winning by three, which makes three the only number in this issue the entire coast can agree on. Hold onto it; we’ll need it later.

1:00 p.m. — Hour at which the entire university closed on a Thursday so that a football game could happen at night. Higher education has never been more honest about its priorities. Somewhere an organic chemistry lab got a half day out of a linebacker, and nobody in that lab filed a complaint.

5–4 — Score by which the Blue Wahoos beat the Montgomery Biscuits in extra innings Thursday after falling behind early.

7–1 — The Wahoos’ second-half record in games played right after a loss. A club that performs only after being embarrassed. I have worked for this club. I have, on certain mornings, been this club.

9 — The magic number: any combination of nine Wahoos wins and Biscuit losses clinches it. Clinches what, exactly, the story didn’t say, and I’m not inventing a pennant on a Friday. For the Biscuits, nine is also roughly the number of days you have left to be gracious about it.

🏛️ The Municipality of Foley, Thinking

6 — Months Foley would like to stop accepting applications for data centers, server farms, and cryptocurrency-mining operations while it decides how it feels about them. The town that built the sports complex the whole Alabama coast drives to has looked at a windowless building full of fans and said: let’s take a semester. This is the most relatable thing a city council has done in 2026. I have been “considering a six-month moratorium” on my own garage since March.

6 weeks — How long part of Springsteen Lane, west of the Foley Beach Express, will be closed for widening and repaving, according to the body of the story.

Nearly 2 months — How long it’ll be closed, according to the headline of the same story. I’m not going to claim the lane is named after the man. I’m just noting that it was, in a sense, born to run, and will instead be widened. If your Orange Beach shortcut goes anywhere near it this fall, tramps like us are taking the Express.

2 — Annual Foley Gaming Cons there have now been, at the Foley Community Library — free, one day, whole family. So to summarize Foley’s position: the gamers are welcome at the library, their servers are welcome to wait outside for half a year. Bring your own laptop. It’s BYO-cloud.

🌊 The Water, Regulated

“Expand” — The one verb the National Park Service got out about its new personal-watercraft wake zones along Gulf Islands National Seashore before the summary ran out of room. Johnson Beach is part of that seashore. Until somebody reads the fine print, the safe assumption for every jet ski on the back side of the Key is: slower, farther, sorry.

2 — Organizations behind this year’s International Coastal Cleanup on our end of the coast: Keep Pensacola Beautiful and the Ocean Conservancy. Show up. The Gulf has been holding your sunscreen bottle since the Fourth of July and would like to give it back, along with a flip-flop that was never yours.

☔ The Sky, Rated

“Slight” — The official excessive-rainfall risk level for our stretch of coast Thursday, with Baldwin County and the Panhandle listed as “especially vulnerable.” “Slight” is Gulf Coast for “bring the good umbrella, not the rental one.” It’s also what every wave off Africa is until it isn’t — and for the record, nothing in today’s feed has a name on it, which in late August is its own kind of headline. Don’t take my word on the sky, though. The cam’s live at /live-cam/, and it has never once exaggerated.

Years — How long Baldwin County has already had an emergency alert system like the one the State of Alabama proudly announced statewide this week. Baldwin County reading the state’s press release the way Orange Beach reads a guy from Birmingham explaining the flag system to his family: politely, from a chair, having done this since before he was born.

That’s the Index. Thirteen numbers, one verb, one “Slight.” Everything on this coast came in a range this week — Foley gets six months to think, Springsteen Lane gets six weeks or eight to not run, the Biscuits get nine days of grace, and the jet skis got a single verb and a cliffhanger. Only one figure survived contact with two reporters: three, the Argos’ margin in both versions of the same Thursday night. Which means the most reliable institution in Northwest Florida is currently a football team with one game of history, and I’m at peace with that.
