The Salt Line, Vol. 87: Downtown Parking Stops Being Free at Up to $1.75 an Hour, a 15-7 Ballgame Filed Under 'Preview,' and a License-Photo Backdrop That No Longer Hangs From the Ceiling
Welcome to the mailbag. It’s the second week of September on the state line, which means three things: the Saturday-to-Saturday families have gone home, the snowbirds haven’t loaded the Buick yet, and every group text on this coast has one guy who has quietly become a meteorologist. He has opinions about “the models.” He has not been to the beach since June. The rest of us watch the sky the old-fashioned way, or let the cam do it from the couch, and as of this writing nothing in the news feed has a cone on it. So this week we open the mail.
Letters are edited for length, spelling, and in one case the number of exclamation points, which was eleven.
📬 “Dear Salt Line, I have parked on Palafox for free since they tore the street up and have come to think of it as a right, like water, or a green flag. Is somebody about to take that away from me?” — Entitled in East Hill
Somebody is. Downtown Pensacola plans to bring back paid parking on October 5, at rates up to $1.75 an hour, now that the New Palafox construction is wrapping up. The city says it lost about 80 percent of its parking revenue while the street was torn up, which is a polite way of saying it handed you a free pass and then paid for it. The new schedule is a mood ring: Sundays and Mondays free, Tuesday through Thursday a dollar, Friday night and Saturday a dollar seventy-five. The city is charging you exactly as much as it thinks you’d rather be downtown. At the top rate that’s cheaper than a beach chair and more expensive than the advice you’re getting here. Hold that number. It comes back.
⚾ “Dear Salt Line, my husband says a 15-7 win ‘doesn’t count’ because the paper called it a preview. He is using this to avoid discussing the score with me. Ruling?” — Keeping Book in Gulf Breeze
Overruled. The Blue Wahoos beat the Biloxi Shuckers 15-7 on Tuesday night, and the writeup calls it a preview of the playoff series that starts in a week. A preview, in the movie sense, is a two-minute clip that gives away the best part. This one gave away a nine-run eighth inning. Nine runs. One inning. That’s not a trailer, that’s the whole film with the credits rolling. And it started with the Wahoos’ starter letting the first five batters he faced reach base, which in most games is the opening of a very bad night and in this one turned out to be a stretching routine. Tell your husband the score counts, the preview is over, and the feature opens next week against the same Shuckers, who have now seen the entire plot.
📸 “Dear Salt Line, I renewed my license in Molino last week and something was different about the photo setup. I can’t put my finger on it. Also my picture looks like a hostage. Unrelated?” — Unframed in Molino
Related, actually. The Molino tax collector’s office has rethought how it takes driver’s license photos, and the news here is that the photo background screens used to hang from the ceiling. Used to. People leaned on them. The office is calling the change an “innovative approach to safety,” and while I’d have gone with “we took the thing down,” I respect the confidence. The new arrangement also puts two Florida specialty plates in front of you while you wait, one of them Save the Bees, which is a small masterpiece of captive marketing: you are legally required to be there, you are not allowed to leave with a bad photo, and now you’d kind of like to save the bees. As for the hostage look, that isn’t the backdrop. That’s the DMV. It has been the DMV since roughly the invention of the DMV, and no ceiling can fix it.
🎭 “Dear Salt Line, I bought a six-foot ladder in 2025 specifically for Palafox on Mardi Gras. I’ve heard a rumor. Do I return the ladder?” — Elevated on Palafox
Hold the ladder, but don’t unfold it yet. The city is weighing whether to keep the Grand Mardi Gras Parade off Palafox Street again in 2027, which would make it two years in a row after 24 years of the parade rolling down that street. Some business owners on Palafox would like it back, on the reasonable theory that a parade is at its best when it goes past the places that sell the beer. So, the street’s year in review: it got dug up, the parking went free, the parade left, the parking is coming back at up to a dollar seventy-five an hour, and the parade is the only thing on Palafox not yet booked to return. Palafox has spent 2026 like a house between tenants. Keep the ladder. Worst case, set it up in a metered spot on October 5, which is a Monday, so it’s free, climb it, and you’ve got the best view downtown of a parade that isn’t there.
That’s the mail. Palafox will charge you to sit still, the Wahoos handed out the ending a week early, and Molino has taken the sky out of your license photo. As far as I can tell, the Gulf is the only thing on this coast not currently under construction, and it’s September, so give it a week.
