The Salt Line, Vol. 90: Field Notes — 24 Losses Undone in One Friday, a Ban Placed on Something Already Banned, and a Scoreboard That Landed on 4
The Gulf Coast in mid-September. The water has gone the color it only goes for about six weeks a year, the parking lots have emptied by half, and the species that remain have entered their most active season. We observe them now, from a respectful distance, at a picnic table, with coffee.

🐕 The Juvenile Canine Presents Her Credentials to the Elders
Here, in a fluorescent-lit chamber in Escambia County, the herd gathers for what it calls a “workshop.” And into this room walks the only mammal present who is not being paid to be there.
Students from the Tate High School Veterinary Science Academy brought their mascot Sadie to an Escambia County School Board workshop this week, where a teacher and four students laid out the program’s accomplishments. And look — I have read a lot of school board coverage in my life, and I am prepared to say that the single greatest improvement available to any public meeting in America is a dog. Not a therapy initiative. Not a task force. A dog, in the room, while the adults talk about scheduling.
Note for the record that Sadie was the only attendee with no agenda item, no prepared remarks, and no stake in the outcome, and she still got the warmest reception in the building.
🏛️ A Solemn Vote to Continue Not Allowing the Thing That Is Not Allowed
And now the great ritual. Observe the commission as it approaches the sacred text.
The Escambia County Commission took no action Thursday night on setting public hearings for a data center moratorium, on the grounds that data centers are already absolutely banned in Escambia County. The quote is beautiful: “Your LDC currently does not allow them.” Which is to say the county convened, considered the possibility of prohibiting something, consulted its own Land Development Code, discovered that a previous version of itself had already handled it, and adjourned.
This is, genuinely, government working. It is also the civic equivalent of driving across town for milk and finding an unopened gallon in your own fridge. Somewhere a 1990s zoning clerk just got their wings.
🏈 Four. The Number Was Four.
The autumn ritual resumes on Friday nights, and the scoreboard, that impartial witness, occasionally files something strange.
From Friday night’s area scoreboard: Tate 28, Crestview 4. Northview 35, Port St. Joe 0. Choctawhatchee at Escambia, postponed.
I want to sit with the 4 for a second, because a football game cannot end in 4 by accident. Four is not a score you fall into. Four is a score you assemble — two safeties, or one safety and a story nobody has finished telling — and I want every detail. The 0 is a normal night. The 35 is a good night. The 4 is a documentary.
Also, in the honest accounting of the week: the postponed game is the most September thing on this list. If you have lived here through an autumn, you know that our actual football schedule is a suggestion that the radar signs off on.
🏆 A Streak Ends in Elberta, and Nobody Is Allowed to Be Funny About It
Occasionally the observer must put down the notebook.
Murphy ended a 24-game losing streak Friday night, beating Elberta 33-6 and handing Sherman Williams his first win as a head coach. The Panthers had not won a game since the 2023 season. He came into Friday at 0-12.
Twenty-four games. Do that math against a high school calendar and you get the real number: a kid could have arrived as a freshman, grown eight inches, gotten a driver’s license, and never once ridden a bus home from a win. Friday, somebody finally did. Whatever you think of Murphy, whatever you think of Mobile, that locker room earned the right to be insufferable for exactly one week and I hope they use all of it. Elberta will be fine — Baldwin County football is a long season and a longer memory.
🦈 The Makos Remain, Irritatingly, Perfect
On the Alabama side of the state line, a young and unreasonably confident population continues to expand its range.
Orange Beach went up to Mobile as an undefeated team, played another undefeated team, and came home still undefeated, taking down LeFlore in the regional showdown everybody on this coast had circled. A high school younger than half the trucks in its own parking lot, on a barrier island that is mostly condos and a state line, keeps going on the road and winning games it has no historical business winning.
If you are new here and wondering how a beach town gets this good at football this fast: nobody knows, we’re all just watching it happen, and there is a real chance the Makos become the thing Orange Beach is famous for that doesn’t involve sunscreen.
🏖️ Wolf Bay Has Been Cleared for Swimming Again, Which You Could Have Guessed by Looking
And finally, the water itself — the one member of this ecosystem that files no paperwork.
The health department lifted the swimming advisory for Wolf Bay at Orange Beach Waterfront Park on Friday. Back-bay advisories after a good soaking rain are routine around here and they clear the way they always clear: a few dry days, a tide cycle or two, a lab result, a press release nobody reads. The bay does not know it was in trouble.
Meanwhile the Gulf side has been doing that September thing where the water goes so flat it stops having a texture. There is no weather in it at all. Don’t take my word for it — the cam is live and it is currently showing off.
So that’s the week on this coast: the water’s clean, the Makos are undefeated, a three-year losing streak finally died in Elberta, and a county spent an evening confirming it had already done the thing it was thinking about doing. And somebody scored four points, which I will be thinking about until Friday.
And in the entire week of documented local behavior, exactly one participant showed up with no agenda, made no motion, requested no grant, and got scratched behind the ears for her trouble. Sadie’s the only one of us playing this right.
