What the flags mean in Orange Beach

The double red rule is different on this side of the line

This is the one thing worth knowing if you're beach-hopping between states. On the Florida side, a double red flag is a closure you are strongly expected to respect. In Orange Beach and the Alabama beach towns, it's enforced — going in the water while double red flags are flying can carry a fine.

People find this out the hard way every summer, usually on the first pretty-looking day after a storm, when the Gulf looks inviting and the rip currents underneath it are anything but. If double red is flying, the beach is still yours — the water isn't. Check the current penalty with the City of Orange Beach; the simpler version is to stay out.

Who flies the flags here

Orange Beach beach safety — the lifeguard program locals call Molly's Patrol — sets and flies the flags along the city's Gulf-front. They make the call on local conditions, that morning, on that stretch of sand.

Which is exactly why the flag in Orange Beach can differ from the flag at Perdido Key a few miles east, or Pensacola Beach beyond it. Different lifeguards, different water, different call. Nobody is copying anybody's homework.

Do Orange Beach and Perdido Key fly the same flags?

No — and assuming they do is how people get caught out. Flags fly independently on each side of the Florida–Alabama line. It's genuinely common to have yellow flying in Orange Beach and red at Perdido Key on the same afternoon, or the reverse. If you're crossing the line, re-check.

Both sides, side by side, are on our Beach Today page.

Can you get fined for swimming under a double red flag?

Yes, in Orange Beach you can. That's the practical difference between the Alabama and Florida sides, and it's worth repeating because it surprises visitors: double red isn't advisory here. Rip currents are the actual reason for the rule — they pull strong swimmers out fast, and the day the water looks calmest after a blow is often the worst day for them.

If you're ever caught in one: don't fight it straight back to shore. Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the pull, then angle in.
