Sand in the Coffee, Vol. 138: the November rental rate, and what a discount week actually gets you
A reader asks the same thing every fall: “The November rate is half the July rate. What’s the catch?”
There is no catch, exactly. There is a trade, and the trade is fair if you know what you are buying. A November week on the Key or in Orange Beach gets you emptier sand, easier parking, and a table without a wait. What you give up is guaranteed swimming weather, and some places run shorter hours or close for the season. Whether that is a bargain depends on the questions you ask before the deposit.
six questions for the rental office
- Is the pool heated, and is it open? Plenty of pools are unheated, and a pool that is technically open at 62 degrees is a decorative feature. Ask for a yes or no in writing.
- What is open nearby? Some restaurants and shops trim their days after the summer crowd leaves, and a few close for the season. Call two places you want to try rather than trusting a listing. Our /happy-hours/ page shows what is running now.
- What condition is the unit in, post-storm? The coast is still cleaning up after the recent storm, and a unit that looks fine in photos taken in June may have a different story today. Ask when the photos were taken, and whether any amenity, such as a beach access or elevator, is limited.
- What is the cancellation rule? The fall tropics are not finished. Ask what happens if a storm closes the area or the building. Get the policy before you pay, not after.
- What does the cleaning fee cover? It stays the same whether the week is cheap or expensive, so it is a bigger share of a November bill. Ask what it is and whether it is refundable.
- Is the rate good for a longer stay? Some owners will quote a better price for ten nights than for seven. It costs one email to find out.
what the weather will actually do
Expect mornings that are cool enough for a sweatshirt, afternoons that can swing warm, and water that has dropped from its summer temperature. Pack for both ends of the day. Before you go, check /beach-today/ for the current flag and conditions, and if you want to see the real sky before you commit, the cam at /live-cam/ will show you the beach as it is right now, not as it was in the brochure.
the swap that makes it a good deal
Spend the money you saved on the things the season is good for. Walk the beach at 8 a.m. when it belongs to the shell people and the dog walkers. Book the late dinner you could never get in July. Rent the bikes. A discount week is a fine bargain if you plan the week around what November does well, and a disappointment if you plan it around what July does well.
the plan
Email the office tonight with the six questions. Keep the replies. Book only if the answers match the trip you actually want.
