Sand in the Coffee, Vol. 141: the gray day, and how to still get something out of it
Nobody tells you this on the drive down: the best photograph you take all week may be on the gray day.
Flat sky, low clouds, the Gulf the color of a nickel. It looks like a bad forecast, and it is actually a different beach, with different rules. Here is how to use one.
step one: look before you cancel
Gray does not always mean wet, and wet does not always mean all day. Before you write off the afternoon, check /beach-today/ for the Florida and Alabama flags and the conditions, and if you want to see for yourself, the cam at /live-cam/ shows the actual sky over the actual sand. If it is only overcast, you have a beach day with no sunscreen math.
step two: take the walk
An overcast afternoon is the best time to walk the beach. There is no glare, the sand is cooler on your feet, and the crowd that came for a tan has gone to find a roof. Walk the water’s edge, where the sand is packed hard and easy to cover, and go farther than you normally would. Bring a light jacket, because the wind has more say on a gray day than on a bright one.
step three: the long lunch
When the drizzle does come through, treat it as an excuse. Pick a restaurant with real seating and nowhere to be. Order the thing you would normally skip because you were in a hurry to get back to the sand. Rainy-day lunches run long on this coast and nobody minds. Servers have seen it before.
step four: the evening, which is often better
Gray days frequently clear toward evening, and a break in the clouds near sunset is the good kind of surprise. Sunset is around a quarter to six this week, so plan to be somewhere with a view by 5:15. Check /happy-hours/ for what is on, and /events/ if there is live music near you.
what to skip
- Swimming when the flag is red. A gray sky makes the water look calmer than it is. Believe the flag.
- Driving the whole coast looking for sun. The weather you left is usually the weather you find.
- Giving up by noon. Half the good gray days turn around after lunch.
the short version
Check the flag, walk in the afternoon, eat a long lunch, and be somewhere pretty at 5:15. That is a full day, and nothing in it needed blue sky.
