The Gulf

AL Unclaimed
restaurant · Perdido Pass / Marinas · $$

Open-air, shipping-container architecture, gulf-front. The Instagram spot — but the food and drinks earn the photos.

The Gulf is the open-air, shipping-container restaurant at the Pass — entirely outdoor, picnic-table seating, gulf-front, and one of the most photographed spots on the Alabama coast for valid reasons. Sunset hits this place perfectly. The cocktail program is one of the better ones on the Boulevard. The food trends toward elevated beach fare — fish tacos, grain bowls, a burger that holds up.

The catch: it’s outdoor, so when the weather goes sideways it goes sideways for everyone. Reservations don’t exist; it’s first-come first-served. In season the lines look intimidating but turnover is fast — the kitchen is set up for it.

If you’ve got out-of-town visitors who want a “this is what Orange Beach looks like” night, this is the easy answer. Pictures will happen. The pictures will be earned.

What to order

The food trends elevated-beach-casual — fish tacos, grain bowls, a burger that holds up — but the cocktail program is the real reason regulars rate it above the average Boulevard spot. Order a drink, order something off the lighter end of the menu, and let the setting do the heavy lifting. This is a place you come for the whole experience, not a single signature dish.

When to go

It’s entirely outdoor and entirely first-come, first-served — no reservations exist. That means two things: when the weather turns, it turns for everyone, so check the sky before you commit; and the lines in season look worse than they are, because the kitchen and the picnic-table turnover are built for volume. Sunset is the peak draw, so arrive a little ahead of golden hour if that’s the photo you want.

Getting there

Gulf-front at Perdido Pass in Orange Beach, near the marinas. Its own lot, but it fills at sunset in season — earlier is easier.
