Perdido Key State Park and Johnson Beach / Gulf Islands are the wide-open public sand. Expect entrance fees and full lots on peak summer weekends — go early.

Public accesses on the Key are signed from Perdido Key Drive and usually have a small lot or roadside spaces, a boardwalk over the dune, and sometimes a shower or a trash can — that's it. If a lot is full, don't improvise onto the shoulder or into the condo next door; drive to the next one. The state park has multiple lots along the road and its own beach walkovers, and it's the safest bet for finding a spot after 10 am. Our beach access & parking guide lists them with what each has.

Wide, white, and mostly bare — no chair rentals or snack bars at the public accesses, so bring shade, water, and everything else. The walk from the boardwalk to the water can be long at low tide. Facilities are thin: restrooms at the state park and Johnson Beach, not at most accesses. Sunrise-to-sunset hours are typical, and gates at the parks close on schedule. Public beach below the high-tide line is public everywhere; above it, in front of a condo, you're on private sand — walk through, don't set up.
