What does a double red beach flag mean?
A double red flag means the water is closed to the public. Stay out of the Gulf. On the Florida side you're strongly expected to respect it; in Orange Beach and other Alabama beach towns, entering the water under double red can carry a fine. The beach itself is still open — just not the water.
Why it flies
Double red is for dangerous conditions — usually strong rip currents and rough surf after storms or strong wind. The Gulf can look deceptively pretty on a double-red day. Pretty is not the same as safe. Read the flags on Beach Today and at the access you actually use.
Alabama enforces it harder
