What to do on a double red flag day

Double red means the water is closed. Not the vacation — the Gulf. Re-check Beach Today (both sides of the line) and the live cam, then pick a backup that still feels like a beach trip.

First: believe the flag

Double red is for dangerous currents and surf — often after storms, when the Gulf looks deceptively pretty. Pretty is not safe. On the Florida side you are strongly expected to stay out. In Orange Beach and Alabama beach towns, going in under double red can carry a fine. Full background: what double red means and Orange Beach flags today.

Morning pivots (still outside)

Food that saves the mood

A double-red day is a perfect excuse for a long lunch. Start with restaurants, best seafood, happy hours, or a Bushwacker if you are celebrating surviving the forecast. Gulf-front decks still have the view even when you cannot swim.

Indoor and under-cover

If you had a boat day planned

Offshore charters and sandbar plans die on bad Gulf days. Call the captain early — good ones reschedule. Alternatives: dolphin cruises only if the operator is running, or swap for a dinner reservation and try the boat tomorrow. Sandbar rules of thumb: sandbar guide.

Re-check before you write the day off

Flags change. A double-red morning can ease by afternoon (or not). Keep Beach Today open. When it drops to red or yellow, ease back in with respect for remaining current.

Common questions

Can I still walk on the beach under double red?

Yes. The beach is usually open; the water is closed. Stay out of the Gulf until the flag changes.

Can I get fined for swimming under double red in Orange Beach?

Yes. Alabama beach towns including Orange Beach enforce double red closures — entering the water can carry a fine. Florida expects you to stay out as well, but Alabama is stricter about tickets.

How long does double red last?

Hours to a couple of days depending on weather and currents. Flags update through the day — re-check Beach Today before you assume it is over.

Is the pool open when the Gulf is double red?

Condo and resort pools are separate from the Gulf flag. Pool rules are set by the property, not the lifeguard flag.
