Quoted from the National Weather Service, Mobile: Perdido Bay Area (GMZ633) and the Gulf, Pensacola to Pascagoula (GMZ650). In this region a Small Craft Advisory means NWS expects "sustained winds of 20 to 33 knots, and/or forecast seas seven (7) feet or greater that are expected for more than two (2) hours" (NWS). The rental company makes the weather call on its boats.

Do you need a boater card to rent?

It depends on which side of the state line the boat leaves from and when you were born. Straight from FWC, the Florida Statutes, ALEA Marine Patrol and the Code of Alabama, checked October 6, 2026.

Who needs a boater card
Florida · Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, driving a boat with a motor of 10 hp or more: an FWC Boating Safety Education ID card plus a photo ID. Florida has no "boating license." source
Alabama · Everyone who drives a motorized boat needs an Alabama boater safety certification. Born before April 28, 1954: no exam, but you still need the certification. source
Visiting from another state
Florida · Your home state's NASBLA-approved boater card, a Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card or an International Certificate of Competency works. No card? FWC's online temporary certificate exam: 25 questions, 19 to pass, good for 90 days, in Florida only. source
Alabama · Since October 1, 2024: a valid boater card from your home state or country, or a Nonresident Alabama Boater Safety Certification. source
Renting
Florida · If you were born in 1988 or later, the rental company may only rent to you if you show one of those (or a course certificate less than 90 days old). It must give you a pre-rental briefing and an on-the-water check ride, and you both sign the form. source
Alabama · On a boat registered with ALEA as a rental, you don't need the certification if the contract says you were instructed, everyone signs it, a copy stays aboard and the driver is 16 or older. source
Age to rent
Florida · A rental company may not rent a motorboat or jet ski to anyone under 18. source
Alabama · The rental exemption needs a driver 16 or older. Each company sets its own renter age; it's on the cards above. source
Age to drive
Florida · No minimum age to drive a boat ("the personal watercraft regulations and boating safety requirements are age specific"). Jet ski: 14. source
Alabama · No one under 12 drives any motorboat or jet ski. Ages 12–13 need the license plus a licensed adult 21 or older within reach of the controls. 14 and up may drive alone. source
Kids' life jackets
Florida · Under 6 must wear one on a boat under 26 feet whenever it is underway (anything but anchored, moored, tied up or aground). source
Alabama · Under 8 must wear one at all times aboard any boat, unless inside an enclosed cabin. source
Alcohol
Florida · 0.08 blood or breath alcohol; 0.02 if you are under 21. source
Alabama · 0.08. Refusing a test means an automatic suspension of your boat license. source

The state line runs through the water. Perdido Pass is Alabama water. Alabama's rules name Old River south of Ono Island, and Escambia County's rules name Old River too, so follow the posted signs for the water you're on. FWC says its temporary certificate "is not valid outside of Florida." We found no official answer on taking a boat rented in Florida into Alabama water on a temporary certificate. Ask the rental company where its boats may go before you leave the dock.

Where you can't run (or can't run fast)

The posted zones around the Key and Orange Beach, from the state, county, city and National Park Service rules.

No motors

  • The signed area by Bird Island and Walker Island (Perdido Pass / Bayou St. John): paddle or push-pole only. Ala. r. 220-6-.54
  • The signed area of Old River near Rabbit Island and Ono Island: gas and diesel engines off and tilted up; electric motors are fine. Ala. r. 220-6-.62
  • The posted lagoons in Big Lagoon by Spanish, Langley and Red Fish Points (National Seashore): combustion engines off and up; paddling, poling and electric trolling motors allowed. NPS
  • The Innerarity Point Park swim area: no boats at any time. Escambia §74-15

Idle speed, no wake

  • The Intracoastal Waterway at the Perdido Key bridge, from 5,500 feet west to 3,500 feet east of it, at all times. FWC r. 68D-24.117
  • All of Perdido Key Coves, from its mouth at Old River, at all times. Escambia §74-9
  • The waterway north of Fort McRee, by Pensacola Pass: slow speed, minimum wake. Escambia §74-8
  • Terry Cove, Cotton Bayou and parts of Old River are marked idle speed on the City of Orange Beach map, and "All Inshore canals are Idle Speed (No Wake)." Follow the posted signs. Orange Beach map
  • Alabama's Gulf beaches, from the shoreline out to the first sandbar, from the Florida line west, jet skis included (not Perdido Pass south of the bridge). Ala. r. 220-6-.36

Gulf Islands National Seashore (the Perdido Key area)

  • No more than 5 boats rafted or anchored together, with at least 100 feet between rafts. NPS
  • No glass on Perdido Key's beaches and shorelines, or in the water outside your boat. NPS
  • Shorebird nesting areas on Perdido Key are closed where signs are posted. NPS also asks boaters not to anchor in seagrass. NPS

There are no FWC manatee protection zones on the Perdido Key side (FWC rule chapter 68C-22). Signs on the water are the final word, and the rental company's briefing covers its own boundaries.

Which boat to rent

What the price usually doesn't include

Want someone else to drive?

Flora-Bama Marina will put a captain on any rental (half day $150, full day $250, paid to the captain), and Wahoo adds one for $75 a half day or $150 all day plus a 20% tip. For a whole day on the water with a crew, see fishing charters and dolphin cruises. Headed to the raft-up? Read Sandbar Sundays first, and keep a VHF on channel 16 (the radio guide has every channel and tow number).

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to rent a pontoon boat in Orange Beach or Perdido Key?

From the companies' own sites (October 2026 dates): most pontoons and tritoons for 10–12 people run about $325–$425 for 4 hours and $450–$625 for 8 hours. The smallest pontoon here is $225 for 4 hours (18 ft, 4 people, Hudson Marina). Slide boats and premium tritoons go up to $650 for 4 hours and $950 for 8. Fuel is extra at most companies (it's included at Flora-Bama Marina and Wahoo), and so is tax at most.

Do I need a boating license to rent a boat in Orange Beach?

Alabama requires a boater safety certification to drive any motorboat, and visitors can use a valid card from their home state. On a boat registered with ALEA as a rental, you are exempt if the rental contract says you were instructed, everyone signs it, a copy stays aboard and the driver is 16 or older (Code of Alabama §33-5-52(g)).

Do I need a boating license to rent a boat in Florida?

If you were born on or after January 1, 1988, yes: an FWC boater card, a NASBLA-approved card from your home state, or FWC's online temporary certificate (25 questions, good for 90 days, Florida only), plus a photo ID. A Florida rental company may not rent to you without one, and may not rent a motorboat or jet ski to anyone under 18.

Can you take a rental boat into the Gulf?

Almost never. Every company here that publishes its boundaries keeps its pontoons and jet skis out of the Gulf. The exception we found: OB Watersports lets its 25' center console go into the Gulf within 3 miles of the Perdido Pass bridge, weather permitting.

Where is the closest boat rental to Perdido Key?

We found no rental dock on the island itself. The closest are at Southwind Marina at Innerarity Point, just across the bridge (Bay Side and Orange Beach Pontoon Boats), plus Gulf Coast Pontoon Rental's drop at the Galvez Landing ramp. At the state line, Flora-Bama Marina is directly across from the Flora-Bama, and Caribe Marina is just east of Perdido Pass.

How old do you have to be to rent a boat here?

Florida law sets 18 for any motorboat or jet ski rental. The companies set their own minimums on top: 19 at Flora-Bama Marina, 21 at Happy Harbor, Bay Side, Island Cruizer and Gulf Coast Pontoon Rental, and 25 at Orange Beach Boat Rentals (Cast or Cruise: typically 25 to book).

How we built this: every price, boat and policy comes from the company's own website or its own booking page, checked October 6, 2026; online prices are for October 2026 dates. Rules come from FWC, the Florida Statutes, ALEA, the Code of Alabama, Escambia County, the City of Orange Beach and the National Park Service. We don't use booking marketplaces, review sites or Facebook. No rental company paid to be listed. Renting boats and not here, or a price changed? Tell us and we'll check it against your site.
