Jet ski rentals

8 companies that rent jet skis from the state line to Gulf Shores, with the prices each one prints on its own site, where each lets you ride, and the rules that change when you cross the line. Fun on flat days; miserable when the bay chops up.

Quoted from the National Weather Service, Mobile: Perdido Bay Area (GMZ633) and the Gulf, Pensacola to Pascagoula (GMZ650). In this region a Small Craft Advisory means NWS expects "sustained winds of 20 to 33 knots, and/or forecast seas seven (7) feet or greater that are expected for more than two (2) hours" (NWS). The rental company makes the weather call on its boats.

Ages, cards and jet ski rules

From FWC, the Florida Statutes, ALEA Marine Patrol and the Code of Alabama, checked October 6, 2026.

Who needs a boater card
Florida · Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, driving a boat with a motor of 10 hp or more: an FWC Boating Safety Education ID card plus a photo ID. Florida has no "boating license." source
Alabama · Everyone who drives a motorized boat needs an Alabama boater safety certification. Born before April 28, 1954: no exam, but you still need the certification. source
Visiting from another state
Florida · Your home state's NASBLA-approved boater card, a Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card or an International Certificate of Competency works. No card? FWC's online temporary certificate exam: 25 questions, 19 to pass, good for 90 days, in Florida only. source
Alabama · Since October 1, 2024: a valid boater card from your home state or country, or a Nonresident Alabama Boater Safety Certification. source
Renting
Florida · If you were born in 1988 or later, the rental company may only rent to you if you show one of those (or a course certificate less than 90 days old). It must give you a pre-rental briefing and an on-the-water check ride, and you both sign the form. source
Alabama · On a boat registered with ALEA as a rental, you don't need the certification if the contract says you were instructed, everyone signs it, a copy stays aboard and the driver is 16 or older. source
Age to rent
Florida · A rental company may not rent a motorboat or jet ski to anyone under 18. source
Alabama · The rental exemption needs a driver 16 or older. Each company sets its own renter age; it's on the cards above. source
Age to drive
Florida · Jet ski: 14 and up. (A boat has no minimum age, but the card rule above still applies.) source
Alabama · No one under 12 drives any motorboat or jet ski. Ages 12–13 need the license plus a licensed adult 21 or older within reach of the controls. 14 and up may drive alone. source
Kids' life jackets
Florida · Under 6 must wear one on a boat under 26 feet whenever it is underway (anything but anchored, moored, tied up or aground). source
Alabama · Under 8 must wear one at all times aboard any boat, unless inside an enclosed cabin. source
Jet ski life jackets
Florida · Everyone riding or being towed wears a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and not an inflatable one. source
Alabama · Everyone driving, riding or being towed wears a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. source
Kill-switch lanyard
Florida · Clipped to the driver (person, clothing or life jacket). source
Alabama · Clipped to the driver, unless the jet ski circles on its own. source
After dark
Florida · No jet skis from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, even with lights. source
Alabama · ALEA "strongly recommends" not riding a jet ski after dark. No towing a skier or tuber after sunset or before sunrise. source
Alcohol
Florida · 0.08 blood or breath alcohol; 0.02 if you are under 21. source
Alabama · 0.08. Refusing a test means an automatic suspension of your boat license. source

The state line runs through the water. Perdido Pass is Alabama water. Alabama's rules name Old River south of Ono Island, and Escambia County's rules name Old River too, so follow the posted signs for the water you're on. FWC says its temporary certificate "is not valid outside of Florida." We found no official answer on taking a boat rented in Florida into Alabama water on a temporary certificate. Ask the rental company where its boats may go before you leave the dock.

Where you can ride, and how fast

The National Park Service changed its jet ski rule for Gulf Islands National Seashore on September 23, 2026: the flat-wake zone along the Florida shoreline is now 150 yards, down from 300. Older pages still say 300.

No motors

  • The signed area by Bird Island and Walker Island (Perdido Pass / Bayou St. John): paddle or push-pole only. Ala. r. 220-6-.54
  • The signed area of Old River near Rabbit Island and Ono Island: gas and diesel engines off and tilted up; electric motors are fine. Ala. r. 220-6-.62
  • The posted lagoons in Big Lagoon by Spanish, Langley and Red Fish Points (National Seashore): combustion engines off and up; paddling, poling and electric trolling motors allowed. NPS
  • The Innerarity Point Park swim area: no boats at any time. Escambia §74-15

Idle speed, no wake

  • The Intracoastal Waterway at the Perdido Key bridge, from 5,500 feet west to 3,500 feet east of it, at all times. FWC r. 68D-24.117
  • All of Perdido Key Coves, from its mouth at Old River, at all times. Escambia §74-9
  • The waterway north of Fort McRee, by Pensacola Pass: slow speed, minimum wake. Escambia §74-8
  • Terry Cove, Cotton Bayou and parts of Old River are marked idle speed on the City of Orange Beach map, and "All Inshore canals are Idle Speed (No Wake)." Follow the posted signs. Orange Beach map
  • Alabama's Gulf beaches, from the shoreline out to the first sandbar, from the Florida line west, jet skis included (not Perdido Pass south of the bridge). Ala. r. 220-6-.36

Jet-ski-only rules

  • Florida side (Escambia County): in the Gulf off Perdido Key, Big Lagoon, Old River and Perdido Bay, no jet skis within 200 feet of the shoreline except in a marked jet-ski area or idling straight in or out; idle speed within 200 feet of any pier or dock; never in a marked swim area. Escambia §74-64
  • Gulf Islands National Seashore: no jet skis in the lagoons of Perdido Key within Big Lagoon; stay 200 feet from paddlers and swimmers; flat-wake speed within 150 yards of the Florida shoreline (it was 300 yards until September 23, 2026). 36 CFR 7.12
  • Robinson and Bird Islands (Orange Beach): "The southern tip of Bird Island is the best area for landing personal watercraft and small boats." No dogs on the islands or in the water around them, and stay out of the islands' interiors (nesting birds). City of Orange Beach

Gulf Islands National Seashore (the Perdido Key area)

  • No more than 5 boats rafted or anchored together, with at least 100 feet between rafts. NPS
  • No glass on Perdido Key's beaches and shorelines, or in the water outside your boat. NPS
  • Shorebird nesting areas on Perdido Key are closed where signs are posted. NPS also asks boaters not to anchor in seagrass. NPS

There are no FWC manatee protection zones on the Perdido Key side (FWC rule chapter 68C-22). Signs on the water are the final word, and the rental company's briefing covers its own boundaries.

A guided ride instead

Three companies run guided jet ski dolphin tours: Alabama Extreme Watersports ($160 a jet ski, 1.5 hours), Barefoot Tours (private, from $215, 1.5 or 2 hours) and Happy Harbor ($229 a jet ski, about 2 hours). A guide picks the water and the speed, which helps when nobody in the group has ridden before. Prefer a boat? See dolphin cruises.

Don't be that jet ski

Stay out of swimmers' lanes, don't run circles around anglers, give boats with lines in the water a wide berth, and watch your wake near paddlers. Weaving through traffic and jumping another boat's wake too close count as reckless operation under both Florida and Alabama law, not just bad manners.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to rent a jet ski in Orange Beach?

From the companies' own sites (October 2026 dates): about $95–$149 for an hour, $350–$499 for a half day and $599–$850 for a full day, depending on the company and the ski. Hudson Marina and Blue Sky (on the beach in Gulf Shores) are $95 an hour; Alabama Extreme's 3-seat WaveRunner is $99. Fuel is included at Happy Harbor; tax and fuel are extra at Hudson.

How old do you have to be to rent a jet ski?

Florida law: 18 to rent a jet ski from a rental company, and 14 to drive one. Alabama: no one under 14 drives a jet ski alone (12–13 only with a licensed adult 21 or older within reach of the controls). The companies here set 18 to 21 to rent, and several let 16–17-year-olds drive with a parent present or signing.

Can you ride a rental jet ski in the Gulf?

Most rentals here are bay-only: Flora-Bama, Happy Harbor and Alabama Extreme say no Gulf, and Caribe and Hudson keep their jet skis from going under the Perdido Pass bridge. The beach-launch option we found is Blue Sky in Gulf Shores. In Alabama, the Gulf from the shoreline out to the first sandbar is idle speed for jet skis, and in Gulf Islands National Seashore jet skis keep to flat-wake speed within 150 yards of the Florida shoreline.

Can you ride a jet ski at night?

Not in Florida: no jet skis from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, even with lights (FWC). In Alabama, ALEA "strongly recommends" not riding after dark, and no one may tow a skier or tuber after sunset.

Are there jet ski rentals on Perdido Key itself?

We didn't find one with a working website of its own on the Florida side; several older ones' sites are gone. The closest are at the state line: Flora-Bama Marina (check-in by Ole River Grill) and Caribe Marina, just east of Perdido Pass.

How we built this: every price and policy comes from the company's own website or its own booking page, checked October 6, 2026; online prices are for October 2026 dates. Rules come from FWC, the Florida Statutes, ALEA, the Code of Alabama, Escambia County, the City of Orange Beach and the National Park Service. No rental company paid to be listed. Renting jet skis and not here? Tell us and we'll check it against your site.
