Where I send people to eat

There are 160-odd places on this site. People do not want 160. They want the short list, so here it is: the eight I name when somebody asks, and the reason each one earns its spot.

No one paid to be here and nobody can. Prices come off each restaurant's own menu on the date shown on its page, so treat them as a guide and not a quote — menus move, especially in season. If a place slips, it comes off the list.

The night that matters

Big Fish Restaurant & Bar

25814 Canal Rd, Orange Beach, AL 36561 · $$$
Big Fish Restaurant & Bar — Canal Rd's upscale-casual seafood-and-sushi room — the local default for a night that matters.

When there is something to celebrate and nobody wants to drive to Pensacola, this is the room. Seafood and sushi in the same kitchen, a real bar, and a filet on the menu for the person at the table who does not eat fish. Expect $$$: the smoked tuna dip runs $16, the flash-fried lobster tail $24, the filet $38. Reservations matter in season.

What to order: Smoked tuna dip to start, then whatever the Gulf fish of the day is.

Oysters, no ceremony

Salty Pearl Raw Bar

13470 Perdido Key Dr, Pensacola, FL 32507 · $$
Salty Pearl Raw Bar — Family-run Gulf raw bar at the foot of the Theo Baars Bridge — oysters on the half shell, chargrilled, and crab legs the regulars swear by.

Family-run, a hundred yards from the Theo Baars Bridge, and built around a raw bar rather than a view. A dozen raw is $18, chargrilled $26, and the grouper sandwich is $20 — which on this stretch of sand is an honest price for honest cooking. This is the one to take a visitor who says they do not like oysters.

What to order: Half raw, half chargrilled, and the tuna dip while you wait.

Sunset, bay side

GTs On The Bay

26189 Canal Rd, Orange Beach, AL 36561 · $$
GTs On The Bay — Bay-side deck, the steamer pot, and a sunset that justifies the wait. Easy answer when 'bay-side dinner' is the brief.

The Gulf gets the postcards; the bay gets the sunsets. GT's has the deck for it, the steamer pot to go with it, and gumbo at $6 a cup. Go early enough that the light is still on the water, because the wait grows with the view.

What to order: Steamer pot, gumbo, and a seat outside.

Morning, before the beach

BuzzCatz Coffee & Sweets

25689 Canal Rd Ste A, Orange Beach, AL 36561 · $
BuzzCatz Coffee & Sweets — Orange Beach's homegrown coffee shop and scratch bakery — the cinnamon rolls are the argument.

A homegrown coffee shop and scratch bakery, not a chain with a beach-themed cup. The pecan praline cinnamon rolls are $5 and they are the reason the parking lot is full at 8am. A full breakfast platter is $11 if a roll is not going to hold you.

What to order: Cinnamon roll, coffee, and a second roll for the cooler.

Tex-Mex on the Boulevard

Cactus Cantina

25311 Perdido Beach Blvd, Orange Beach, AL 36561
Cactus Cantina — Mexican and Tex-Mex grill on Perdido Beach Boulevard.

Mexican and Tex-Mex on Perdido Beach Boulevard, the kind of place that absorbs a sunburned family at 5pm without a reservation and without a fuss. Margaritas, a grill menu, and portions sized for people who have been in the water all day.

What to order: Fajitas for the table.

Everyday upscale

Cosmo's Restaurant & Bar

25753 Canal Rd, Orange Beach, AL 36561 · $$$
Cosmo's Restaurant & Bar — Orange Beach's everyday upscale. Weekday lunch, weekend wait, decent at everything. The kind of menu where the table can't decide and everyone ends up happy.

The menu that settles an argument: seafood, steak, pasta and a bar menu under one roof, done well enough that nobody feels they compromised. Pecan redfish $32, Asian-glazed tuna $31, scallops $36. Weekday lunch is the quiet way in; weekends you wait.

What to order: Pecan redfish.

Table of six, nobody agrees

Pedro's Tacos + Tequila Bar

13584 Perdido Key Dr, Pensacola, FL 32507 · $$
Pedro's Tacos + Tequila Bar — The Key's Mexican kitchen — tacos, quesabirria, fajita platters and frozen margaritas, a few doors from the Theo Baars Bridge.

The Key's Mexican kitchen, a few doors from the bridge, leaning traditional rather than Tex-Mex-by-numbers — chilaquiles, carnitas, tamales, quesabirria. Plato Pedro's puts six different things on one plate for $16.99, which is the cheapest way to end a debate.

What to order: Carnitas, or Plato Pedro's if you cannot choose.

The anniversary

Voyagers

27200 Perdido Beach Blvd, Orange Beach, AL 36561 · $$$$
Voyagers — Orange Beach's premier Gulf-front fine dining at Perdido Beach Resort — dry-aged steaks, Gulf seafood, and an award-winning wine list with the water out every window.

Gulf-front fine dining at Perdido Beach Resort: dry-aged steaks, a wine list that has won awards, and the water through floor-to-ceiling glass. It is the most expensive room on this list — grouper is $52 — and the one where the view, the kitchen and the service are all pulling in the same direction.

What to order: Crab stack, then the Gulf grouper. Book the window.

Why only eight?

Because a list of forty is a directory, and you already have one of those — it is right here, with menus and prices for 60-plus kitchens on both sides of the state line. This page is the shorter answer: the places I am happy to be judged on.

Think one is missing, or that one of these has slipped? Tell me — that is how the list stays honest.
