For families who want built-in activities and rainy-day backups, Orange Beach wins — The Wharf, waterparks nearby, mini golf, an aquarium and endless charters. For families who mainly want a calm, uncrowded beach and space to spread out, Perdido Key is better. Both have gentle Gulf water and are 20 minutes apart, so many families split the difference.

Toddlers and preschoolers: Perdido Key, for the calm water at Big Lagoon and the shorter days — you're not going to use the attractions anyway. Grade-schoolers: either, but Orange Beach's built-in stuff (the Wharf, mini golf, the boats) buys you sanity on the third day. Teens: Orange Beach for the activity list, and the freedom of a walkable-ish core, or split it — a quiet base on the Key and a couple of big days across the line. Everybody: a rainy-day plan, because there will be one.
The rainy-day and double-red test
Ask where you'd be at 2 pm on a Tuesday if the flag is double red and it's raining. On the Key the answer is the condo pool (if it's covered), a movie, and a drive somewhere.
